Terrible Tuesday!!

It’s really not a terrible day, I’m just gonna get on a rant today!

Will someone, anyone, please explain to me HOW the government expects the economy and the unemployment rates change?  I see where there is going to be a “vote” on raising the minimum wage.  Come on…  Why is there any discussion about it?  Lets face it.  The cost of food, electric, heating, gas, clothing, housing, babysitting fees and everything else goes up.  Why in the world wouldn’t the pay?

You know, not everybody goes to college.  And even the ones that do can’t always find a job.  BUT, if someone is making more on unemployment then they are going to make with a job…come on, everyone is smart enough to figure out that’s a no brainer… It wouldn’t be very smart to take a job making less than you are already getting.

It’s like when someone loses a spouse.  People will say later on, well what are you doing with “dad’s” money?  What did you do with all your savings?  People, when you lose a spouse, you lose their SSI.  You don’t get BOTH incomes anymore.  Food prices didn’t change, the electric bill is the same, heating is the same, you still have insurance to pay, and so on and so on.  The surviving spouse now has the same bills (except they have gone up) with half the pay and SSI hasn’t given a cost of living increase in two or three years.  Am I the only one who sees this???

We hear all the time about people losing everything they have.  Now, granted, some of it is because they live above their means, but many times it’s because they drown.  I know many who are trying their darndest to continue to keep their heads above water, making $10 an hour, with children to support, a spouse to support, house payments, insurance, electric, heat, food, and just everyday stuff.  As a matter of fact, I have been there.  I am just blessed that my husband was in the right place at the right time to get the promotion he got and to be able to receive an increase in pay.  He has flourished in his job.  I went back to school to become an RN only to be placed on disability six years later.  But, at least I have my SSID.  I wouldn’t have that if it weren’t for having the job I had.

My point to all this is, people need to receive the pay they deserve.  Increases in everything around us without increases in pay is just a disaster for all concerned.  Not everyone makes huge amounts of money to be able to afford all the increases.  If they can live on welfare and or unemployment better than if they had a job, well, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that one out!!!!

Okay, I’m done for today…sorry about getting all roused up but this kinda stuff drives me nuts!!!

  1. The problem with your outlook is that, in large part, the cost of doing business comes from labor. (Obviously some businesses see that more than others.) If you pay a worker at McDonald’s the minimum wage of $7.25 an hour you can sell your Big Macs at one price and make a profit. But if you increase the minimum wage to $10 an hour, either one of three things happens:

    1. McDonald’s eats the added costs (not likely.)
    2. They raise the price of the Big Mac because labor is more expensive. (Fortunately for them chances are the Burger King across the street has to do the same – but the rest of us who make $10 an hour and don’t get the raise are hurt.)
    3. They let people go because they need to keep labor costs where they are and can’t raise the price in the market.

Right now they are talking about doing this in Maryland, which simply means that in two years when they are done everything will be much more expensive – meaning there will be a push to raise wages again.

You bring up a valid point re: unemployment, which is one reason that continually extending the unemployment benefits is such a bad idea. This was meant to be insurance, not a way of life. It’s also another reason businesses are struggling since their unemployment insurance premiums are sky-high to cover the additional weeks.

    • I understand exactly what you are saying. I understand as well, maybe this isn’t the answer but when the cost of these things go up and the pay doesn’t, it also causes problems! There has got to be an answer!!! Thanks for the comment! I really do appreciate it!
      Keep on reading!!!

  2. I don’t know too many people (with the exception of those who have either found a way to or inherited wealth-) who aren’t frustrated with todays economy. Watching the news the other day we see that the Government by the people for the people is considering raising the federal deficit cap-isn’t that like having a credit card for a million dollars thats reached it’s limit, you can’t afford the payments anymore, so the card company raises the limit another million dollars? I think almost every State of the union is broke-in debt, now the federal Government is following, I think it’s gonna take a little more than raising wages to cure the ill. I think it was Robert Lafavre (sp?) who said, “Government is a disease masquerading as it’s own cure.” It’s getting scary thinking about the future of our country.
